To understand the history of the Church, we must look at it from both perspectives: as the body of Christ, and as a human institution. We must see it as a community of faith, and as a social and political entity. We must see it as a bearer of the gospel, and as a product of its time and place. We must see it as a source of grace, and as a site of sin and corruption. Only by holding these two perspectives together can we begin to understand the complex and often contradictory history of the Church.
