The period of the Roman history, which it is my design to delineate, extends from the age of the Antonines to the subversion of the Western Empire. I shall pursue the revolutions of this declining period; and observe how insensibly the struggle of freedom and servitude was lost in the enjoyment of luxury, and finally oppressed by the weight of military despotism. The memorable series of revolutions, which, in the course of thirteen centuries, gradually undermined, and at length destroyed, the solid fabric of Roman greatness, may, with some propriety, be divided into the three following periods.
