The small sitar shown on the right of the plate is of Deccan manufacture. It is ornamented prettily with ivory carving, and the body of the instrument is formed from a cocoa-nut. Sitars of this kind are much used by native ladies, and their tone is singularly sweet and plaintive, though, of course, not so powerful as that of the larger sitars. The method of arranging the frets and of playing the instrument is precisely as that described for the larger sitar in Plate III.
