On the West Coast, and in Malabar, another drum of much the same shape is employed. It is usually very light and fragile, the shells being made of large gourds. Five or six of these drums are commonly used in religious services and the noise at certain seasons of the year resulting from this method of worship is almost incredible, and is continued for days together, by relays of performers, at certain festivals.
