The six original râgas are the only instances of the Suddha class; but opinions differ so widely as to the present names of these six râgas, and as to how the modern râgas have assumed their present form, that it would be nearly impossible to make any classification. The nomenclature of all the râgas differs in various parts of India; and so many and subtle are the distinctions between the different râgas, each of which has a character of its own, exclusive, if a mixed râga, of that of the râgas from which it may be derived, that to give more than a few examples would be an almost endless, if not impossible, task.
