These songs are of comparatively recent introduction, being first sung by the Kanarese musicians of the Court of Surapuri, a petty state near the celebrated Humpé ruins. The popularity of songs of this kind increased rapidly, and they are now to be heard throughout the whole of Southern India, where they take the place of the Tappa of Hindustan.
