In (iii) the accents appear to lose their grammatical meaning entirely and to be given a musical meaning. The udātta is now the terminal of the tetrachord, at Ga and Ni, with the svarita above it and the anudātta below it. The udātta is ‘raised’ above the others not in pitch, but in musical eminence. The svarita loses its sense of ‘graced’ note, and becomes a note of certain relative pitch. The *anudātta* is no longer of indefinite ‘low’ pitch, forced under certain conditions ‘lower’ (*anudāttatara*), but becomes definite.
