Some of the melodies described have very curious designations. Vāhulī is said to be a Maharaṭṭa lady (? Marahaṭṭa-vanitā), and Deśī is said to be a grand-daughter of Ahanga (? Ahangasya papautrī).² Puṇḍarīk Viṭṭhal’s descriptive verses are more iconological, and hieratic, and very rarely indicate the emotive significance of the melodies in dramatic conceptions such as met with in the verses of Nārada and others.
