The royal capital of Bādāmi fortified by Pulakēśi I, in 543 A.D. as stated in his inscription on the cliff of the North-hill, was not only the place of martial spirit but also the cradle of Indian Art and Architecture. Other than Bādāmi Aihole, the place of the celebrated "Ayyāvoḷe Ainūrvaru" had a form of defence architecture encircling the whole habitation and the structural temples thereat that began to come up gradually. The extant remains of the fort now dotted here and there in semi-circular form, at Aihoḷe, reveal the rectangular bastions connected with screen wall crowned by battlements of round top (obviously a late feature added subsequently).
