During the Early Kadambas of Banavāsi, this important town was described as Pānktipura and a part thereof known 'Kuppatturu' was given as gift to a Brahmin Svāmīśarman of Kaundinya Gotra by Dharmamahārāja Krishna Varma-II of Pānktipura (K.I. 1952, Vol.II, No.1, pp. 1.ff.).
