The fort (Percy Brown, 1962, P.73) is roughly oval shaped in plan, the western part being broader, with wide moats (36 m. wide), filled with water besides tall and formidable defence curtains interconnected by colossal watch-towers and gun-bastions. It has six imposing entrances. The area covered by the fort is 4 km. east-west and 3.25 km. north-south. Bijāpur fort is the most spacious fort of the muslim rulers in Karnāṭaka.
