From the Mauryan period onwards, i.e., in the Kautilya's Arthaśāstra a detailed descriptive rules regarding the construction of the forts are available. Some important textual extracts of the different periods beginning from the Kautilya's Arthaśāstra, relevant to the study of the forts made above are given in the Appendix.
