the *Reformatio Legum Ecclesiasticarum*, which was to have been the code of the new Church, was never enacted. The *Book of Common Prayer* was indeed established, but the *Reformatio* remained a draft. The Church of England was left with a body of canon law which was largely medieval, and which was only modified by the *Acts of Uniformity* and the *Royal Injunctions*. The *Reformatio* itself, though it never became law, is of the greatest importance for the understanding of the mind of the reformers. It shows that they were not merely concerned with the reform of the liturgy, but with the whole life of the Church, and that they were prepared to use the power of the State to enforce their discipline.
