v1.c6.s5.70

Among the acolytes of Varuṇa, Śoṣaṇa, 'Drying up', and Pāpayakṣman, Consumption, are constant evils. The afflictions that proceed from his inauspicious aspect go as far as the north-west corner, where Roga is stationed; he is Disease, the Shortener of life (anāyus, 'Viṣṇudharmottara, 1. c.) according to that branch of the tradition to which belong the 'Bṛhatsaṃhitā', and other texts. Śoṣaṇa, Emaciation and Withering up, is Saturn (Śanaiścara) and his saturnine agent is Pāpayakṣman, Consumption.¹⁰³
