v2.c11.s8.44

⁵⁸ The names Hīragrahaṇa, also Hīra or Hīraka occur (S. S. LIV. 24, LVII. 253 ; 497) ; in Gujarat, Hīragrhas are the corbels intended to hold the lower tenons of bracket figures (Burgess-Cousens, op. cit. p. 24). Hīragrahaṇa, ‘containing or enclosing the diamond’, may originally have referred to the corbels (such as in Bedsa, Karli, Nasik, etc.) forming an inverted pyramid of slabs above the Āmalaka in the casket, while Hīraka may denote the Āmalaka, the stone whose meaning is as precious as a diamond.
