v2.c11.s8.60

¹⁹⁶ Buddhist stone inscription, 8-9th century; 'Ind. Ant.', XVII. p. 308. Each Śṛṅga or miniature Śikhara has its Āmalaka in the hierarchy of celestial regions (Pls. IV. XLV) whether these shapes are distinct us as on the temples of central India, or form one sequence of architectural form as in Rajputana (Pl. LXXI), Aihole (Fig. p. 183) or in Orissa, where the Āmalaka-quoins appear as mouldings of the 'Koṇaka pāga'. In these positions they do not symbolize the sun in the 4 quarters; the corners of the temple, as a rule, are in the intermediate directions.
