Śiva is the ‘Ender’ (antaka) of the Three citadels (Tripura) of the Asuras. They had been built by Maya, of gold, in heaven, of silver in mid-air and of iron, on earth. At the end of their time, it is said these citadels would unite into one and should be destructible with a single arrow.
