v1.c6.19

¹³ *Trikāṇḍaśeṣa*, II. 1 to 11. It is related in the *Harivaṁśa* that Manu once offered a sacrifice to Mitra and Varuṇa, with a prayer for progeny, and the result was a beautiful maiden, Iḍā or Ilā, who issued forth from the fire dressed in exquisite apparel, and adorned with a profusion of ornaments. A quarrel thereupon arose as to who should possess her, and it was ultimately decided that she should change her sex, and alternately become a man and a woman. In her feminine capacity she abided with Budha, son of the Moon (Soma), and became the mother of Purūravas; and as a man, under the name of Sudyumna, she had three sons, the eldest of whom Utkala, got Orissa, the second Gaya became the master of Gayā, and the third Vinatāśva was invested with the sovereignty of the Western country. It does not appear, however, that the son of Sudyumna gave his name to the country. *Harivaṁśa*, Chap. 10. The *Bhāgavata Purāṇa* gives this story with slight variations, and the *Viṣṇu* and *Brahmā Purāṇas* attribute the change of sex to a malediction of Śiva.
