v1.c6.20

¹⁴ Sterling says it means "the famous portion", and some of his Paṇḍits elaborated this into the region famous in the Kali Yuga for its temples and Kṣetras. *As. Rs.* XV. 166. Mr Beames derives it from *ut* "out" and *kala* "a strip" an "out-lying strip", but doubting the applicability of the second term, he adds "in classical Sanskrit we have only *kalā* fem., but the masculine must also have been in use, as is shown by numerous forms in the modern languages". *Proceedings, Asiatic Society, Bengal*, 1870, p. 193. Some suppose that the word *kūla* "shore", is probably one of the components of Utkala, but I have nowhere seen the conjecture developed. Others derive it from *utka* and *lāti*.
