**Basement :** In Rām Rāz's work on the architecture of the Hindus, forty different designs are given, from the simplest to the most elaborate and ornate, for pedestals and bases of pillars. In Orissa most of these have been employed, either intact, or variously combined, in the ornamentation of the stereobate.
