v2.c17.s1.344

16. *Vāmana-janam.* This festival takes place on the eleventh of the waxing moon in Bhādra. In the Hindu calendar it is the day when Viṣṇu in his sleep turns from the right to left side; but at Puri it is observed as the anniversary of the birth of the 5th, or the Dwarf, incarnation of Viṣṇu. The image of Jagannātha, on this occasion, is dressed like a dwarf and provided with an umbrella and an urn, in the same way as the Dwarf incarnation is usually painted and described in the Śāstras.
