17. *Kuār Pūnāī.* The full-moon of Āśvina is, in Hindu calendars, dedicated to Lakṣmī, the Indian Ceres, and goddess of fortune, who is worshipped at night, and the night is kept up in gambling. The Uriyas observe this rite and pay their adoration to Lakṣmī in her temple according to the ritual enjoined in the Smṛti; but in addition to it, they have, during the day, a grand procession in honour of the discus of Viṣṇu, the Sudarśana-cakra, which is carried about in a litter through all the main streets of the town. This procession is nowhere enjoined in the Smṛties, and in it we cannot help noticing the survival of the Buddhist rite of the Procession of the Wheel of Law.
