In a number of places in the *purāṇic* literature we see a sort of fierce denunciation of Śiva and the Śaiva cult; this is perhaps on account of some of the revolting rites connected with the worship of Śiva. A graphic description of these rites as has already been mentioned, is given by Bhavabhūti in his *Mālati-Mādhava*.
