In studying Hindu Iconography, after we have taken into our account, the differents sources of the manuals and the monuments, we have classified the Indian images accordingly and have also determined their proportions of measurement and the manifold substances, there is still something very important to be said before the Pratimā-lakṣaṇas of various deities belonging to different religious sects and sub-sects, are attempted. This is the Doctrine of Mudrās, the symbolism in Art, very intimately associated with Cult-Icons in India.
