**Bodily poses and postures of legs, etc.**—One of the fundamental canons of art-painting and sculpture (iconography) is the depictation of various hand-poses, the poses of the body and the postures of the legs what are called the mudrās and sthānas. They simply bring life and animation in the picture. Besides the conventional poses (20) referred in his works Kālidāsa has the knack of creating some very charming yet complex poses like Kaṇṭhasūtra, Kaṇṭhaśleṣa, etc. (21), found depicted in the paintings of Ajaṇṭā.
