**Meterials.**—Bāṇa refers to separate brushes for separate colours and the most popular brushes of the poet’s day seem to be Vartikā, Kālāñjana-vartikā and Kūrcaka (13) (cf. also the Ś.S’s prescriptions Chap. 77) (exclusive brush for applying black), Varṇaśuddha Kūrcaka (for the use of white). The third variety of the brush, tūlikā (in the sense of Lekhani of the Śilpa texts) used for final touches was also known to him, H. C. (14). The alābu or gourd in the present context (used by Bāṇa) might have been used in those days for stocking colours and other essential artist’s requisites.
