Alī Mardān Khān, a famous engineer in Shāhjahān's service, constructed or repaired canals, and laid out the Shālamār gardens at Lahore (see Index, *s. v.* 'Alī Mardān Khān', *Imp. Gaz.* 1908). I am not acquainted with any evidence connecting him with the Tāj.
