² Sleeman, *Rambles and Recollections*, ed. V. A. Smith, vol. i, p. 385. The MS. used by Anderson (*Calcutta Rev.*, 1873, p. 237) alleges that artist No. 1, unnamed, 'a rare plan-drawer and artist,' was a Christian, as was also Muhammad Sharīf. Sleeman appears to have used a similar document, and agrees with the custodian's MS. in stating that Muhammad Sharīf was the son of No. 1, whom Sleeman names as Ustād Īsā. The name Īsā may have suggested the notion that the Ustād was a Christian (*Īsāhī*). If 'Ustād Īsā' and Muhammad Sharīf really were Christians, one of the objections urged against Father Manrique's statement is removed.
