Purugupta’s short reign may have been due to his having succeeded his brother when he was quite old. But we find that his son Narasiṃhagupta Bālāditya had also a short reign of about four years, for his son Kumāragupta II is seen on the throne in the year 473. Within three years of this date we see Budhagupta, uncle of Kumāragupta II, installed upon the imperial throne and he is seen to be ruling the empire down to c. 495 A. D.
