The matrimonial alliance with the Lichchhavis was the most dominating political event of the reign of Chandragupta I, and it profoundly affected his coinage. He is seen to be issuing coins only in one type, where the place of honour on the obverse is shared both by him and his queen Kumāradevī; the reverse however exclusively mentions the name of the Lichchhavis. Chandragupta I is the earliest Hindu ruler, whose inscribed gold coins have come down to us.
