§ 58. Ujjain. — The earliest coins bear the inscr. *Ujeniya* in Brāhmī characters of probably the 2^nd cent. B.C. (**Plate IV, 5**). All the other coins known at present are uninscribed, and are distinguished by a symbol which appears to be characteristic of, though not altogether confined to, this district (**Plate IV, 6**). They do not afford sufficient data to allow of any satisfactory chronological arrangement.
