Pl. XXII. 9 is taken from the Kawgun cave inscription. The writing is very crude. Except for the open-mouthed type of *ma*, which must have been derived from the Sanskrit writing known in Burma, all other forms including the medial vowels are southern, and do not appear in South-east Asia before the sixth century a.d. The date may fall in the sixth to seventh century a.d.
