Who were these people who built Mohenjo-daro and Harappa? No definite answer can be given at present to this question, though it is certain that they were a pre-Aryan race, for their cities were flourishing some thousand years before any Aryan-speaking people had entered India, an event which took place, according to modern ruling, about 1500 B.C. It may be that the Indus Valley people were invaders, as their settlements up till now have all been found in the north-west of India; but in any case it is probable that they were already highly civilized before they entered the country, indeed, their culture appears to have been superior to that of Elam or Sumer.
