The variants *mu lā ṇa* and *mulaṉ* (*mūlaṉ*) occur in two pottery inscriptions respectively at Uraiyur⁶ and Kodumanal.⁷ The name is derived from the asterism (Ta.) *mūlam* < Skt. *mūla*.
