⁶ *kōvaḻāṉ* is analysed as *kō* 'chief' + *v* (glide) + *aḻāṉ* (name). The name is attested in Old Tamil; cf. *aḻāṉ* and *aḻāntai*, cited as illustrations in *Tol. Eḻu.* 349, comm., Iḷam. The name *aḻāṉ* is also attested as a variant reading in *Naṟṟ.* 121, comm. Mayilai. The incomplete expression *... maṇacaṇṭai* is probably a place name.
