The site of *Tepe Hissar*, just mentioned, is near Damghan, and Hissar I has black-on-red painted ware with patterns similar to the black-on-buff pottery of Giyan Vd, and the cast metal tools and other features fit in with Sialk III, so Hissar I cannot be much earlier than late Uruk times. In the next phase, Hissar II, the old painted pottery tradition is interrupted by the appearance of plain, burnished grey or black ware, not like the grey ware of Uruk, but indicating newcomers from outside the painted pottery territory, probably in Jemdet Nasr or even later times. With the Hissar III settlement, when this pottery becomes dominant, we will deal later.
