It will be seen, therefore, that in Persia and Turkestan there is a series of cultures which show significant relationships between themselves, and which can be equated in date with the Mesopotamian sequence. It has not been possible, however, to group these under inclusive type-site names following the Mesopotamian practice, and we must still refer to them by their site and sequence-number in the stratification. It sounds complicated, but in assessing the position of the prehistoric Indian cultures in the general Western Asiatic picture, we shall have constantly to refer to them in terms of Persia or Mesopotamia. This chapter is an attempt to clarify this background to the Indian material, so that the reader will have some appreciation of what ‘trade relations in Early Dynastic times’ or ‘pottery of Giyan V types’ may mean when he encounters these phrases later in the book.
