There is one important site which has been excavated in Russian Turkestan, at Anau near Askabad. Here the first settlement, Anau Ia, seems to be of Halaf date and has connexions with Sialk II and Giyan Va, and in Ib copper first appears and the painted pottery tradition already present in Ia continues, through Ubaid into Uruk times. As at Hissar, grey wares appear to mark an intrusion of new people into the area at the end of Ib, and the two types continue side by side in Anau II, when other innovations in pottery styles might point to trade or immigration from Baluchistan. By Anau III a culture is established which has many points of similarity to that of Hissar III, and they will be discussed together later on.
