Around Kalat the mountains narrow to less than a hundred miles from east to west – from the desert of Upper Sind around Jacobabad to the high plateau above the 3,000-feet contour stretching from beyond the Pishin Lora River to Sistan and the Helmund Oasis - and the peaks rise to over 10,000 feet at Koh-i-Maran. The modern Quetta, an oriental Camberley, sprawls unlovely by the side of the ancient caravan town at the head of the great Bolan Pass, linking Kandahar to the Indian Plains; a wide, fertile valley between the mountains where in spring the fruit-blossom rivals in its brightness the snows still lingering on the heights.
