Even with its modern irrigation the Sind Desert remains repellent and inhospitable beyond the limits of the artificial waterways. The ever-shifting mouths of the Indus lose themselves in a wilderness of lagoons and mangrove-swamps, while 20 miles inland old shore-lines can be recognized, with cliffs and promontories looking out over a desert of long-dried mud. Behind Karachi the foothills of the Kirthar Range rise stonily from the sand, and hot springs in the little valleys give rise to unexpected secret oases of lush tropical vegetation.
