The vast majority of all vessels of Nal and of Amri ware have a distinctively very fine soft buff or pinkish paste, which may sometimes approach an off-white and occasionally have a green tinge. On this, a white slip is frequently applied as a background for painted ornament. At Nal itself, where the larger scale of excavation and the abundance of intact vessels provided a cemetery gave a more extended series than is otherwise available, a limited number of vessels of grey or even dark-brownish colour, sometimes verging on black, were found, either unornamented or with motifs in relief or light paint, quite unlike the more abundant vessels of pale paste. The excellence and homogeneity of the paste in all the vessels are shown by the extremely thin walls often obtained. The pots are normally wheel-turned.
