Apart from the two cities, the Harappā civilization is represented by a large number of small towns and villages of varying size and status, and at least two fortified sites. There is considerable variation in the size of these settlements, ranging from such sites as Chanhu-daro, whose extant remains cover an area 1000 by 700 feet, to hamlets like Amilano, a bare 300 by 200 feet. It is impossible to estimate precisely the area of the Harappā occupation at Dabar Kot, which, as far as it is known, occupies only the upper part of the great 100-foot-high tell. This tell has a diameter of 1200 feet at the base, but it may have covered an area some 450 feet across, and similarly at Sandhanawalla on the Ghaggar River the Harappā occupation was contained within the top 9 feet only of a 28-foot-high mound measuring 750 by 500 feet at the base.
