The reign of Pulakēśin II was followed, owing to heavy defeats, by an interregnum of thirteen years. The early family was divided; Pulakēśin II's descendants being the ‘Western Cāḷukyas’; Kubja Vishṇuvardhana's ‘the Eastern Cāḷukyas,’ ruling over territory conquered by Pulakēśin II from Kaliṅga, Southern Kosala, Piṣṭhāpura (Pithāpur = the Godavari river tract) and from the Pallavas of Kāñchi.
