The verse is found in the *Mahābhārata*, XIII, 62, 84 (with *tathā* for *evaṃ* and *vivardhate* for *prarohati*); *Bṛhaspatisaṃhitā*, verse 12 (with *sadyas*° for *Śakra* and *prasarpati* for *visarpati*). Cf. *Mahābhārata*, XIII, 33. Ballāla’s *Dānasāgara* (op. cit., p. 316) attributes the stanza to the *Dāna-Bṛhaspati* at one place and to Vṛddha-Vasiṣṭha elsewhere (p. 322; with *janma-prabhṛti mānavāḥ*).
