OLDER BRĀHMAṆA WORKS—In *sūtra* IV.3.105 Pāṇini refers to *Brāhmaṇa* and *Kalpa* works enounced by older Ṛishis (*Purāṇa-prokteshu Brāhmaṇa-Kalpeshu*). As examples of older *Brāhmaṇa* works, Patañjali mentions the *Brāhmaṇa* works of the *Bhāllavins* and the *Śāṭyāyanins* (IV.2.104; II.296), to which the *Kāśikā* adds that of the *Aitareyins*. The *Bhāllavins* were a well-known school of the *Sāmaveda*, and Śāṭyāyana figures in the Vaṁśa list of Jaimini whose *Brāhmaṇa* work known as the *Jaiminīya Brāhmaṇa* is still extant. Of all the lost Brāhmaṇa works that of Śāṭyāyana has been quoted most frequently (B. K. Ghosh, *Fragments of Lost Brāhmaṇas*, p. ii).
