Amongst moral virtues, Pāṇini mentions *prajñā*, *śraddhā*, *tapa*, *tyāga*, *viveka*, *dharma*, *śama*, *dama* (VII.2.27; III.2.142). Persons endowed with high moral character were recipients of social honour as *śamī*, *damī*, *tyāgī*, *vivekī*, *dharmī*, *tapasvī*. Persons who performed meritorious actions relating to life in this world and in the other (*Ishṭa* and *Pūrta*) were honoured as *ishṭī*, *pūrtī* (V.2.88). Religious gifts constituted a pious act (*dharma*) and the use of one's wealth for such objects was called *upayoga*. These benefactions were expressed by such linguistic forms, as *sahasraṁ prakurute*, *sahasraṁ vinayate* (I.3.32; I.3.36).
