The reputation for bravery which the Marathas and Karṇāṭas possessed in the days of Yuan Chwang was maintained if not enhanced in our period. Bengal rulers used to recruit soldiers from Karnatak and Lāṭa, ³ a procedure which will clearly show that the Rāṣṭrakūṭa dominions were inhabited by races, famous all over the country for their martial qualities. In his *Viddhaśālabhañjikā* Rājaśekhara, a contemporary writer, pays a handsome compliment to the bravery of the Karṇāṭas when he observes that they were naturally brave.⁴
