v4.c19.207

This truce with Bījāpur set Shivājī free to renew his contest with the Mughuls (see chap. viii, pp. 258 *sq.*). Shortly after the death of his father in 1664, he assumed at Rāīgarh the title of raja and struck coins in his own name. He continued his depredations, both by land and by sea, until he learnt that a Mughul force was preparing to attack him, Aurangzīb’s temper having at length been aroused by the plundering of pilgrim ships on their way to Mecca.
