During Shivājī’s absence at Delhi in 1666 Jay Singh had besieged Bījāpur, but the field army of that kingdom, assisted by a contingent from Golconda, had cut off his supplies, rendered his position before the city untenable and obliged him to retreat to Aurangābād. He was recalled to court, but died on the way thither, and Sultān Mu‘azzam again returned to the Deccan with Jasvant Singh as his deputy.
