Nādir Shāh marched from Lahore on 6 February and reached Sirhind ten days later. Thence he marched to Tarāorī, 10 miles north of Karnāl, reaching that place on 22 February. The governor of Ambāla had fallen back on Tarāorī and attempted to hold the large *sarāi* in that town, but a very brief bombardment by the Persian guns induced him to surrender. Nādir Shāh's system of intelligence was excellent, while in the opposite camp no attempt was made to obtain information.
